Building Science Principles Course at MAXT Makerspace Outline -- Winter 2025
In collaboration with MAXT Makerspace and Peterborough Renewable Energy Planning (PREP), Lakes Region Community College’s Building Science Principles course includes:
➢ Four virtual sessions
➢ BPI’s Building Science Principles Reference Guide – 274 pages, full-color ➢ An exam code and time to take the BSP online exam on the last day ➢ Online exam review materials and practice quizzes via the LRCC Canvas portal
LRCC’s BSP curriculum is customized for New Hampshire and similar northern climates, complementing BPI’s BSP Reference Guide. The five 3-hour modules include: Module A: General Concepts, Heat Transfer and Insulation
➢ Building science introduction; construction terminology; energy and thermodynamics; thermal boundaries; and insulation.
Module B: Airflow & Air Sealing and Moisture Dynamics & Control ➢ Building airflow; air leakage and air sealing; building moisture dynamics; and moisture and indoor air quality.
Module C: Heating, Cooling and Mechanical Ventilation
➢ Combustion basics; heating systems; cooling systems; domestic hot water systems; and combustion safety; and mechanical ventilation.
Module D: Baseload Energy Conservation and Performance Strategies ➢ Baseload savings: electricity and water; renewable energy; energy monitoring and assessments; work scopes; BPI national standards and certifications. Module E: Review and BSP Exam
➢ Take the online BSP exam after a short review. The exam is not timed but will take about two hours for most people. Next steps post-BSP.
Successful participants will earn the nationally recognized BPI “Building Science Principles Certificate of Knowledge.” See www.bpi.org for more information. Tuition: $600 for the entire NCWK 902L package with classes, textbook and exam. Eligible participants receive a full tuition scholarship!
