Peterborough Public Art Exhibition

“The Mixtape”

Summer 2024

MAXT is looking for sculptures to be on display throughout downtown Peterborough starting the week of August 1st. through October 1st.  The exhibition is open to professional artists of all backgrounds.

The pieces will be a part of a town wide exhibition sponsored by individual businesses around the town of Peterborough. They will be a highlight feature of the Peterborough Night Market, which occurs on Friday August 9th, with thousands of attendees.

Artists will be matched with the business where their work will appear by a jury put together from local artisans in the Monadnock Region.  The business will sponsor the work by providing a location and a stipend of between $500-1000 to host the work for the duration of the exhibition.

This year’s Theme: The Mix Tape

Inspired by 90’s mix tape culture, we are looking for pieces that are thought provoking explorations on a theme, play with genres, demonstrate unexpected juxtapositions, or create something new with what was old.  The artist may interpret the theme however they would like, and should submit an explanation with their application.

Pieces must:

  • Fall within the Theme.

  • Sculptural pieces must be no taller than 6’ and  4’ wide.  They must have a secure base and can be temporarily anchored down. Artists will be responsible for safely securing the sculpture to the site location.

  • Steer clear of topics that include political, profanity, illegal references, must be appropriate for general audiences.

  • Be installed and removed by the artist.

  • Instillation plans will need to be approved by building owner once artist/location is assigned.

  • Generate wonder when being viewed.

The deadline for this application is end of day, June 15th.

We hope to include artisans from anywhere in New England, with the understanding the artist will transport the sculpture to and from the location. Sculptures can be already created if they work within the parameters listed below. The hosting business will enter into a lease agreement with the Artist for the duration of the exhibition and the Artist is responsible to uphold all terms and conditions of the agreement as set out therein.

Sculptures will be placed in predetermined locations at the discretion of the MAXT jury/committee and Building Owner’s. At the end of the lease any sales/leases of sculptures will be conducted solely by the artist or their agent and will not involve MAXT Makerspace or the hosting business.

Artists will retain the ownership of their sculpture and will be responsible for carrying comprehensive insurance to cover it in the event of theft or vandalism and public liability. The risk of loss or damage to the sculpture will always be borne by the artist, and the artist will be responsible to repair and or replace all or part of the sculpture in the event of loss or damage thereto during the exhibition.

MAXT Makerspace and the hosting business will be responsible for media relations and publicity for the sculpture exhibition. The artist will retain copyright for their sculpture and grant MAXT permission to take and distribute images of the sculptures.
